"Clothes? Bags? Shoes? Food? Anything! I need to get something. FAST!"

I know what you are thinking. That is a typical thought that runs through most girls' head.

"PR? Marketing? What? I need to make a decision but yet I have to make sure I don't regret."

Why am I always so conflicted. There is no sure way to weight the pros and cons for both courses. I need guidance. PRONTO!

Too many thoughts. Too little resources. Sitting here at around 11.30am on a beautiful Saturday morning. By the sea. I am truly appreciative of the fact I was posted 'here'. What's there not to like?

Every day, I feel lost. Is it because I will be out of 'job' in a few months? Unsure of what I want to do with my life? Trying to imitate the adults in my life? Maybe all of the above.

*sighs* All the ramblings are stuck in my head.

Soaking in the warmth and the picturesque scenery, I can't help but 'wander' around my vivid imagination of the possibilities that are readily present in my life. One can't help but admire the god-like power of some who seems to 'own' the world.

Rich in every sense of the word, the ever cliched question pops; Are they happy?

From my current position, it is quite obvious my answer is negative. I shan't try to decipher the 'meaning' of life but will continue to be 'enlighten' by my surroundings.

(Office) Politics

Yes, I can hear your judgement out loud; who am I to talk about politics considering that I didn't attend college (just your average polytechnic student). The thing is, politics occurs wherever you go and it doesn't stop even if your dead, literally (i.e. The living folks arguing about who gets more $$$ and whether should the deceased have a Christian or Taoist funeral etc. The likes.)

It is even more strange to know that politics occur even after enlistment. Strange as it may sound, it is the men that gossip MORE (openly and loudly) than women. Why do I bring gossip it in when the subject is politics you may ask? Well, these two, GOSSIP and POLITICS can never be separated. When there is gossip, there will be politics and vice-versa.

How does politics work you may ask? Well, in every society, there is a hierarchy. The leaders, the middle and the bottom or known as the followers. P.S., I fall under the followers.

In each rung, there are people who dislike one another. Sometimes, people from another rung dislike a person from a rung not from his own i.e. Guy/girl A from rung 1 dislike Guy/girl B from rung 2. When caught in this situation, the 'spectators' from the rungs of the 'affected' few (those who dislike each other), 'talk' or gossip about them. This small 'talk' or gossip spread to the people from other rungs and as the game of chinese whispers continue, the gossip evolve from a ball of fire to a erupting volcano. And there you have it; Politics and Gossip.

You can try to rid society of politics but it will never happen because there will always be juicy gossip just waiting to be told from one person to another.

You know what I am talking about *winks*.

Good morning =)! It is a fabulous Monday morning and I am perky! The side effects of too much caffeine I guess.

Currently, I am hungry...still. *feeling Ris Low* I think she is brilliant and brave. *salut*

My food is depleting but on the contrary, my morale is at all time crazily...(I am afraid to say) high! Okay, so I am trying to entertain myself but hey, I've got to do what I've got to do.

Shoulders aching, migraine and needs sleep, when can I get my 'holiday'?!

So long for now. Gonna enjoy my cup noodles =)

The weekly travel trip (Week 3, Day 1)

Today is Wednesday. 24 hours before the usual Thursday mounting. About 190 hours more till our dismount. The thought itself is kinda scary but hey, I have one freaking week's worth of off; that is 7 whole days! And, I brought enough 'picnic' and entertainment to last me throughout the next 190 hours.

REWIND!

Just so you know, currently, my life is in a rut. A knowledge-deficit rut. I have mounted duty twice. This 'work' week is my third. I DISLIKE being stuck in ... ehh wait, I am not allowed to indulge others in such information.

Anyway, in a nutshell, my work week is Thursday to Thursday; if you count by days, is 8 days, if you count by hours, full 7 days.

Recently, actually about 3 months ago, I joined something random. Didn't believe I was chosen for the finals. Now, due to the physically and mentally demanding nature of my 'work', I kinda regretted and tried once to back out. Did I mention that the schedule for that 'contest' was delayed partly due to me? Guilty!

I just want to get my life back in order. Is it too much to ask?

It has been exactly 5 months (i.e. 11/09/09 - 10/10/09 - 09/11/09 - 08/12/09 - 07/01/10 - 06/02/10) since I have enlisted.

A new place, new people, new rules. Great. Just what I needed.

My life is disappearing a little at a time. Is this the new beginning? Did everyone go through this phase?

Stop the facades and just be myself. Can I? The masks I wear has been ingrained so deep, I can't peel it off.

Pain. Physical, spiritual or emotional. It seems unavoidable. Perhaps pain really is weakness leaving the body ... or is it?

Day 1 - Fukuoka

I shall write this post, Polytechnic style:

* There was no window seat
* Those that were at the window seat near my given seat were SLEEPING!
* It was a 6 hour ride from Singapore to Fukuoka
* Felt like nothing since I have sat for about 21 hours (US trip)
* Although the 6 hours is a far cry from the 21 hours I have experienced before, I had a migraine and the air-conditioning on the plane was FREAKING COLD!
* When we arrived, left the International airport via shuttle bus (FREE =D) to the Domestic Airport. Apparently, it cost cheaper to provide free bus service to and fro than to make train rails to the International Airport. =X *joking*
* Took the train to a station nearby the Hotel.
* Walked a distance before arriving at this Shopping Centre where it is linked to the Hotel.

The rest is just ... well ... REST! And slight walking around; trying to orientate ourselves. Won't write about the other days. Insufficient sleep and I probably forgot about it. =X

Being 20.

October 7th. I became 20. Period.

The faster time passes, I realized that birthdays have no meaning; it's just another day.

Today, 28th of November. I am sitting at my laptop typing rapidly, trying to remember. Trying to feel the sweet nostalgia of what it was like to be 18.

My service for this country started about two and a half months ago. Now that I am reaching my POP (Passing Out Parade) date, I begin pondering about what I would become.

Am I still who I am? Probably not. Factors around me have influence my thinking. Right now, I am just stuck with - What done is done, regretting won't get you anywhere.

Amends were made, memories forgotten. Time heals all wounds and perhaps one day help me understand why I got them in the first place.

Brownie Cups

Won't bother with any introduction. Lovely moist, melting, choco bites in a CUP! yay!

Makes: 18 cups

Ingredients:

Butter 225g
Chocolate chips 2 cups
Flour 1 cup
Sugar 1 1/2 cups; 1 cup brown, 1/2 cup white
Eggs 4 whole, small
Vanilla extract splash

Method:

Step 1: Always, always, always preheat oven; 325°F/160°C

Step 2: Melt butter with 1 cup chips

Step 3: Combine flour and sugar. Mix well.

Step 4: Add eggs one at a time and stir.

Step 5: Pour melted chocolate mixture to batter. Add vanilla.

Step 6: When batter is slightly cooler, add chocolate chips.

Step 7: Spoon into paper cups and bake for 30-35 mins.

*NOTE: baking time fluctuates depending on brand of oven. you can add in one Hershey kisses in each cup before baking.

Peanut butter Icing

Ingredients:

Betty Crocker® Rich & Creamy vanilla frosting entire tub (1 .lb)
Peanut butter 1/3 cup (the more the better, but don't be too greedy =X)
Milk 2-3 tbsp

*NOTE: the more peanut butter you add, increase the amount of milk too. you can choose to use CRUNCHY or SMOOTH peanut butter.

Method:

Step 1: Mix all ingredients till smooth.

Step 2: When brownie cups are cooler (at least wait for 3-4 hours; best is overnight), spread frosting and quickly place in air-tight container. Store in fridge.

Step 3: ENJOY =)!

*NOTE: After refrigeration, the brownie might be quite hard. Microwave for 30 seconds or so. Accompany with good vanilla ice-cream. Mix melted frosting with ice-cream and....SCREAM in joy! =)

On 9th of May, it is Vesak day. The day where Buddha was born. Blah blah blah. One day before 9th May, Kim, HY and I decided that we should have a religious gathering. Thus, made our way down to Bugis 觀音堂 (Kwan Im Thong Hood Cho Temple). We prayed, cast our lots and left. I didn't get a good lot but still, life seems neutral.

Since today's outing was a 'budget' one, we thought of going to the National Museum!

Let's face it - English is a crazy language. There is no egg in eggplant nor ham in hamburger; and neither apple nor pine in pineapple. English muffins weren't invented in England or French fries in France.

And why is it that writers write but fingers don't fing, grocers don't groce and hammers don't ham? If teachers taught, why don't preachers praught? And if Dad is Pop, how come Mom isn't Mop?

The plural of box is boxes, but the plural of ox is oxen and not oxes. One fowl is a goose, but two are called geese, yet the plural of moose should never be meese. You may find a lone mouse or a nest full of mice; yet the plural of house is houses, not hice.

If the plural of man is always men, why shouldn't the plural of pan be pen? If I spoke of my foot and show you my feet, and I give you a boot, would a pair be called beet? If one is a tooth and a whole set are teeth, why shouldn't the plural of booth be beeth?

We speak of a brother and also of brethren, but though we say mother, we never say methren. If the masculine pronouns are he, his and him, why aren't the feminine she, shis and shim?

Doesn't it seem crazy that you can make amends but not one amend, that you can comb through annals of history but not a single annal?

Sometimes, I think all English speakers should be committed to an asylum for the verbally insane. What the other reason could there be for saying that people recite at a play and play at a recital? Or ship cargo by truck and send cargo by ship? Or have noses that run and feet that smell?

How can a slim chance and a fat chance be the same, while a wise man and a wise guy opposites? How can overlook and oversee be opposites, while quite a lot and quite a few are alike? How can the weather be hot as hell one day and cold as hell another?

Have you ever seen a horseful carriage or a strapful gown? Or met a sung hero or experienced requited love? Have you ever run into someone who was combobulated, gruntled, ruly or peccable? And where are all those people who are indeed spring chickens or who would actually hurt a fly?

You have to marvel at the unique lunacy of a language in which your house can burn up as it burns down, in which you fill in a form by filling it out and in which an alarm goes off by going on. English was invented by people, not computers, and it reflects the creativity of the human race ( which of cause, isn't a race at all).

That is why, when the start are out, they are visible, but when the lights are out, they are invisible. And why, when I wind up my watch, I start it, but when I wind up this essay, I end it.

As many would know, I recently graduated from TP. Now that I am without any studying obligations, what exactly does Winston do in his free time?

Well, apparently, attending Medical Appointments are one of them =). I have been frequenting CGH to do all sorts of test.

Saturday's Outing - To the temple we go =)

After I came back from the US, my life has really been a mess. Pictures to clear, room to clean, notes to read, books to borrow, languages to learn, exercise regime to plan, recipes to cook/bake etc.

Anyway, finally met up with HY and Kim's. On our way to find the Korean restuarant, we went to this Buddha temple which holds the Tooth Relic.

Interestingly, we went in for some sought after prayers and a little tour. (pictures only show the beautiful roof garden)

After our meal, we walked and found a mini-mart that sells everything KOREAN. Wow!

Vivocity. Went there after all that crazy Korean stuff. If you view the picture below correctly, you can see children riding a 'toy' resembling a pony/horse and also some funny animals like leopard. The amusing thing is that it looks somewhat similar to iGallop.

It is kinda funny to think that I always envision myself as a grownup. At 15, I thought I was invincible. At 17, I thought I knew everything. And at 18, I thought life as an adult was just getting better. But now at 19 (although I admit I am chao lao 臭老), I think that I was always wrong. Mistakes were made but I quickly picked myself up. In summary, I have so MUCH to learn and so little time.

It is 20 minutes to 3 o'clock on a Sunny but windy afternoon. A cup of cold coffee in one hand and Harry Potter in another (yet I still manage to type this while reading). It seems that one can postulate that I am actually enjoying this. But not till recently (actually I have known this forever just...) I understand that enjoyment is only temporary. One cannot live in this bustling cosmopolitan without $$$.

Okay, so perhaps this probably isn't a right time, but I better hurry before inspiration leaves my finger tips.

Many thoughts and theories just rush into my head leaving me breathless and unable to concentrate on what to write. *Deep breathe* Here goes:

In all honesty, I think my life is seriously left in a rut; recent grad, slacking my life away, and all in all, life does suck. But why lament over it when the possibilities to change it are endless?

If life doesn't suck enough, throw in stale emotions and the aftermath of alcohol, the possibilities for drama and destruction is vast.

You know it was never you but a certain voice is talking in your head, saying you are useless, and nothing more than you'll ever be. STOP punishing yourself!

So how does oneself prevent yourself from inflicting punishment upon yourself???

You simply don't! Don't think of what that stupid voice is saying and never regret your decisions. What has been done, can't be undone.

I think I will stop for now. Too tired to think any further.

Day 3: Philadelphia - Washington D.C.

Woke early in the morning to visit the Independence Hall, the Liberty Bell, and the United States Mint. Lots of pictures. And yeap, I a little lazy to do the commentary.

Back on the bus to the next destination. LOTS of random photos.

LUNCH break. Had quite a pathetic lunch though.

清明节 (qing ming jie)

Every year, on the 9th of the third month (Chinese Lunar Calender), marks the annual ritual of paying respects to our deceased loved ones. [according to my Dad is 9th of the third month but most Chinese pay their respects any time from the 1st to the 30th of the third month]

This year is no different. I even blogged about it last year - Qing Ming. Usually, most of my paternal relatives would turn up. Sadly, this year is just me, my mom and dad, grams and her youngest daughter [my aunt la].

Anyway, I woke up at 5.30am and tried to rush to my grams by 6am. We reached Mt. Vernon [place of the iconic 'HDB' site for the dead] before 7am. It was still really dark. Even had to use a torch.

First, we placed the stuff at my paternal granddaddy's area.

Then I went with my mom to see her parents' site.

My maternal grandmother and grandfather. My mom, being christian and all, can't take up joss sticks and paper. Well, at least she got them roses =). [she was 'ker-tod' by this store in Parkway Parade. S$2.50 per stalk of rose. So expensive.]

I use to remember when I was little, my mom and some of her sister would come here together on Qing Ming to clean the ancestral site. I haven't been here to pay my respects to my grandparents for about a decade. Gosh!

By the time we got back to my paternal granddaddy's site, sunlight filled the area.

This tradition is soon fading. Should I carry on for my grams? =)

Anyway, last but not least, can you guess which is my granddaddy? [I couldn't take a full shot like my maternal grandparents because my mom said my grams didn't really want me to take photo. Ooops. Sorry grams. I wanted to show the world my granddaddy.]

McDonald's scrambled eggs?

Always wondered how to make perfect scrambled eggs just like the ones sold in McDonald's? Well, help is here!

With reference to this SITE [view the site for more in depth details!], making scrambled eggs is never going to the same again.

The idea of making fluffy oeuf ('egg' in french), is to add AIR! If only air could be added the same way as adding sugar or milk...

Anyway, to incorporate air, we need to 'beat' (why do we have to punish our food?) the eggs - simply by using a whisk or fork (but by comparison, we do know that the whisk is a much better tool. I just included the fork as you know, we do get lazy in the washing department).

Winston's perfect recipe adaptation [refer to the site stated above] for 1 hungry person:
Ingredients:
2 eggs (preferably large. medium will do just fine)
2 tsp of milk (whole milk, anything less is okay - I have to say this as I just grad. with a nutrition diploma =X)
1 small pinch of salt (sea salt in my opinion is fine, gourmet salts are the BEST!)
Some pepper
1/2 to 1 tsp of unsalted butter (salted butter is perfectly fine) or olive oil =X
Method:
1. Heat a non-stick (if its otherwise, just add a little more fat), medium size frying pan using a medium flame.

2. Break the eggs in a medium/large (so that during 'beating', none will spill out) and the rest of the ingredients (except the butter la).

3. Using a whisk/fork, beat the eggs. (refer to diagram below) Do not beat for too long; the eggs are well mixed and have some froth on the top.

4. The pan should be just right now. (use your hand to 'feel'; raise your hand about 20-30cm above the pan; it should feel warm-hot)

5. Place the butter in the pan. The butter should start to liquefy BUT butter should not sizzle and do NOT brown the butter.

OR

5. If using oil, you will be able to smell a little of the olive fragrance and see tiny bubbles forming. At this point, you can add the mixture [skip step 6].

6. Just before the butter has completely melted, add the frothy egg mixture. Add this point, do not scramble.

7. Allow for about a few seconds (say 10 seconds? depending on your flame and pan heat) before scrambling.

8. Allow the uncooked mixture to touch the pan and repeat [step 7] till it resembles McDonald's scrambled eggs!

9. Transfer to a plate and serve hot/warm. Add salt and pepper to taste!

Notes:
*I prefer using whole milk as it adds creaminess. In the site mentioned above, it says whole milk give a slight milky taste but I say it adds calcium =). You get to enjoy the creamy goodness of scrambled eggs and get calcium (no matter how little it is) at the same time. LOL
*It seems contradicting as it was mentioned in the site (under "things you shouldn't add") that sea salt shouldn't be added. It also state that sea salt, table salt or any gourmet salts are the same when broken down. BUT they didn't mention anything about how it will upset the scrambled eggs if added. Strange...
*Since this recipe for 1 person used 2 eggs, please do NOT eat whole eggs for the next 5 days at least. If you are just gonna eat the whites, please do not eat like 5 whites a day la unless you are some body builder. Too much protein (or anything for that matter) is never good for the body.
*Winston just LOVES to use only 'natural' products. Which is why (unless baking) I wouldn't use cream of tartar and use only ingredients that are already bought (unless drinking milk isn't a common practice in your household). Then..."Yeetameetongpai, BOWEIKONG!" (It means "Next station," in Thai and then "speechless" in Hokkien. Don't you think "Boweikong" sounds like a Thai station?)

6.30am, Sunday the 15th (N.Y.C. Time) was the time to gather. However, (no offence to P.R.C. citizens) but I really cannot stand some of them. No mannerism. Shall not spoil my mood by typing their digusting behaviours. Ohh, before I forgot, the exciting coffee machine! [pictures]

We set out in the coach and I was taking pictures as we travel.

We reached the Chinatown in Mahatten. Went to this small HongKong-style cafe for breakfast. Was happily taking pictures till the shop assistant said "No photos allowed!". Oh well.

A 1 1/2 hour ride to Phildelphia and had dinner at this random place. Food was extremely salty. Was extremely shagged till I couldn't even take pictures. oops. Anyway, Hotel is Hyatt. YAY! Extremely beautiful.

Queen size bed all to myself. YAY! EXTREMELY comfy. Haven't had a good night sleep for the longest time esp. during MP.

Wide and flat screen LG tv. Wooo. Okay, so maybe I don't live the high life but this is really cool okay.

I was at Changi Airport using all the free internet and stuff. LOL. And finally, time to board.

It's 12 midnight, Saturday the 14th (Singapore Time). The plane is about to lift off. Luck was definitely not on my side as I didn't get my window seat.

Supper was the first meal served. It was at about 2 am (Singapore Time). The menu:

Smoked salmon with pasta & vegetable salad [Appetizer]
I love the salmon =). Winston, the sashimi eater! Pasta? i can have it for lunch and dinner. YUMS! This is my kinda appetizer.

Roast Beef fillet served with mushroom sauce, roasted vegetables and gratinated potato [Main]
The roast beef was kinda tough to cut but it wasn't that bad as I thought it would be. I love the gratinated potato. But due to the cook-freeze process, the roasted vegetables (esp. eggplant) taste quite rubbery.

Cheese and Cracker [Cheese]
I don't really like the taste of that cheese.

Marble Cheese Cake [Dessert]
Too full to finish the cake =X

Throughout the trip, I tried sleeping but only for about 2-3 hours. Finally after 13 hours [1.45pm, Saturday the 14th (Singapore Time) ] we arrived at Frankfurt. I am so happy of Singapore's technology - wireless internet access, power points and even shops for transit passengers. But not for Germany. The stop over was about 2 & 1/2 hours. The flight from Frankfurt to New York was at about 3pm, Saturday the 14th (Singapore Time). The journey was about 7 hour 45 minutes. We arrived at New York roughly at 11pm, Saturday the 14th (Singapore Time); 11am, Saturday the 14th (N.Y.C. Time). Along the way, I tried to take pictures but the trip was kinda bumpy.

Finally, after about 45 minutes, we arrived at the Marriott Hotel. The time now is 2.54 am, Sunday the 15th (Singapore Time); 2.54pm, Saturday the 14th (N.Y.C. Time).

After some refreshing moments, we headed to this HUGE mall that sells clothing and other stuff at much affordable prices.

Not many picture of this mall though. Was extremely tired after all that movement. Disappointment as their sizes are huge and they don't have the style I am looking for. Too bad.

The day pretty much ended when we reached "home"; hotel.

Thinking aloud: Having a quarter-life crisis.

If we can live to 100 years and a mid-life crisis comes at about 40 something then I am very much entitled to a quarter-life crisis.

What ever became of the loud talking Winston? Perhaps slightly mellowed down (or I want to think it this way) or have I gone back to the Winston I used to be? 'Emo-ing' is an understatement.

What am I going to do with the rest of my life? What sort of purpose/aim do I have? Please do not drag religion in because it will just complicate matters.

Rather than going on about how miserable I am, perhaps I should look at the other angle where I can benefit from learning. It is all about the yin-yang theory; When there is light, there is darkness; when there is good, there is evil. One fills the other as neither can survive without the other.

Superficiality creeps and engulf me whole. I am surrounded by everything beautiful that I take a second look at myself. Still figuring how to draw the line between want and necessary.

Perhaps it is time to do the cliche: Runaway to a Third World country and try to live there for a while. With my lappie to update? Perhaps not.

Firstly, I wanna say or scream rather...

EXAMSAREOVER!!! (is this the hugest font size it can go? lousy =X)

Firstly, I wanna thank SISTER Tan! HAHA. I don't know why but I think she is my huge inspiration for ND (Nutrition in Disease). Without her teaching, I probably would have died studying this module.
*secret* I don't think I will ever dare/want/try to work in a Hospital. MUCH MUCH MUCH to 'afraid' =X *secret*

Secondly, I am so excited about my (our, rather) cruise trip to Malacca/KL! But, we have decided due to the timing, we might be staying on board the ship. Thirdly, my mom told me that for our yearly vacation (apparently, from my last trip, South Africa, it has been more than a year) we are going to: New York City! Also, it will take me a freaking 24hours (stop-over at Germany, Frankfurt) !!! The weather is freaking cold so, anyone wanna sponsor me a nice trench coat or equivalent? Plus, we will be moving from city to city everyday; changing hotel everyday. OMG! I am definitely bringing my lappie so I can blog about the trip. I will try my best to take LOTS of pictures. People 'shopping' is my favourite hobby. I can indulge in the beautiful people for hours without getting sore eyes. HAHA. Anyway, today's post is dedicated to beautiful Koreans - Pretty boys and handsome girls (androgynous) .

The first is Lee Hong Gi (이홍기). He is younger than me by 1 year. OMG! Also, he is a member of F.T. Island (Five Treasure Island). He is simply a pretty boy. The annoying part is, he doesn't even have to try hard.

Next is Yoon Euh-Hye (윤은혜). She is 5 years older than me and is of the same horoscope as me =)))! She acted in the drama The 1st Shop of Coffee Prince as the daughter whose father died and became the head of the house and ... which is why she looks like a guy.

OH My GOD! She looks so adorably cute. I think I am in love with her. Totally bright personality and bursting with cute-ness. I can't breathe. HAHA.

A little Nutrition - Miracle Soy?

Something to take note of. This is my true story, nothing altered. These are facts, as they relate to my experience, my opinions based on what I have read and felt. I am relating them to warn other young health-conscious women who are unwittingly harming themselves.

In 1989, I graduated from high school in Texas and couldn't wait to hit the big college city. One of the changes I wanted to make was to eat healthier.

Once I moved to health-conscious Austin, Texas, I began to fortify my body with the best and healthiest foods I could find.

Tofu was the main ingredient in every healthy dish and I bought soya milk almost every day and used it for everything from cereal to smoothies or just to drink for a quick snack. I bought soya muffins, miso soup with tofu, soybeans, soybean sprouts, etc.

All the literature in all the health and fitness magazines said that soya protected you against everything from heart disease to breast cancer. It was the magical isoflavones, the estrogen-like hormones that all worked to help you stay young and healthy. I looked great, I was working out all the time, but my menstrual cycle was off. At 20, I started taking birth control pills to regulate my menstrual cycle.

In addition to this I began to suffer from painful periods. I began to get puffy, it was as though I was losing my muscle tone. I began to suffer from depression and getting hot flushes. I mistook all this for PMS since my periods were irregular. By the time I was 25, my periods were so bad, I couldn't walk.

The birth control pills never made them regular or less painful so I decided to stop taking them. I went on like this for another two years until I realized my pain wasn't normal. At 27, my gynaecologist found two cysts in my uterus. Both were the size of tennis balls. I went through surgery to have them removed and thank God they were benign. The gynaecologist told me to go back on birth control pills. I didn't. In 1998, he discovered a lump in my breast. Again, I went through surgery and again it was benign.

In November 2000 my glands swelled up and my gums became inflamed. Thinking I had a tooth infection I went to the dentist who told me that teeth were not the problem. After a dose of antibiotics the swelling still did not go down. At this point I could feel a tiny nodule on the right side of my neck. I told my mother I had thyroid trouble. She thought I was being silly. No one in the family suffered from thyroid trouble. Going on a hunch I saw a specialist who diagnosed me with Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma.

After a series of tests he told me it was cancer. My fiance and I sat stunned. We were not prepared and I was so scared. We scheduled surgery right away. The specialist told us that it would only be after the operation that a pathologist would be able to tell us for sure if it was cancer. They found a tumor in my right lobe composed of irregular cells and another smaller tumor growing on the left, so the entire thyroid was removed.

They told me that after undergoing radioactive iodine I would be safe and assured me that I could live a long life. After treatment I began to search for the cause of all these problems. I never once thought it could be all the soya I had consumed for nearly ten years. After all, soya is healthy. I came upon a web page that linked thyroid problems to soya intake and the conspiracy of soya marketed as a health food when in fact it is only a toxic by-product of the vegetable oil industry. This was insane, after all, the health and fitness magazines had said nothing about soya being harmful.

I visited a herbalist who was diagnosed with thyroid cancer in 1985. She informed me that soya was the culprit. She had a hysterectomy due to cysts and other uterine problems. A few months later another acquaintance who had consumed soya came down with thyroid cancer. A girl in England I met through the Internet in a thyroid cancer forum had just undergone surgery and she was only 19.

What was going on???? Breast cancer is linked to estrogens. What mimics estrogens in the female body, SOYA!

But I never suspected soya because until now I never once found a single article that stated soya could be dangerous. Women who took soya prior to thyroid problems will continue to take it after if they are not aware of what soya actually does, what it contains and how it reacts in the female body. I think this is the reason that women with thyroid cancer often develop breast cancer later.

My co-worker is big into soya and I see her losing hair and gaining weight despite a walking workout during her break and after work, and apples and oranges for lunch. She just had cysts removed from her uterus too.

I warned her to stay off soya. I referred her to websites but until it is on the evening news on all four networks, women will suffer. Since the thyroidectomy, I do not touch soya, haven't for two years.

Dear readers, please use my story in any way you can. There are so many young girls who are consuming soya because they think they are taking care of themselves, and women taking soya because they want to be healthy.

It is so unfair that the information about the dangers of soya isn't more widely circulated. It is sad. There are many out there who feel this way and it is a terrible blow when you realize you are not as healthy as you thought and that the information that you depended on was wrong."

Gist:
This lady consumed too much soya due to health reasons. She became sick; painful and weird-timing periods, thyroid problem etc. Saw a specialist and found out the problem was Soya.

After some research...
There is no such thing as 'Miracle Foods' in the world. After a small (but just-enough-to-understand-the-situation) research, I found that soy is not only a good vegetable-source (but remember that its Biological Value still cannot be compared to animal-source) protein, but lowers cholesterol and all those 'amazing stuff' advertised. However, through my research, it was also mentioned that soy and some other plant products contain Phytoestrogen. Phytoestrogen basically acts like the human estrogen.

Currently, scientist and doctors and whoever-is-interested-in-this are doing extensive research to find if there is a relation (certainly there is according to this email but...) between Phytoestrogen and 'women'-related problems such as breast cancer (btw, it can happen to men too) and menopause.

Food containing Phytoestrogen:

My 2-cents worth:
Please do NOT follow blindly. Always take everything with a 'pinch of salt' (not literally; Hypertension!). Consult someone who is in the business or refer to trusted websites [i.e. org (not wikipedia), edu, gov etc.].

It's official. Unwanted nostalgia is stirring constantly. Nothing I do will rid myself of it. I guess, suppression has its limits.

'Small', unwanted, ostracized etc. These are just some of the words that kept appearing in my mind. There are better things to be worried about and this is just not it.

"No! You are not suffering from any psychological problem. You are just mentally exhausted." That's what I told myself. At 1am today, I actually took time from doing my actual work to come clean about this.

Wishing all Chinese a Happy Lunar 牛(niu) Year! May this year give us the strength of an ox to go through all the hurdles.

Today is the 1st day of the Lunar New Year. Was at my paternal gram's place and realised, how old I am getting. I remembered the days when I was still in Primary school, the days when I was almost finishing Secondary school, and now, I am almost going to graduate with a diploma.

Anyway, hope I will pull through this year. =)

Inferiority complex. It seems as humans, our greed has really gotten to us. The more we have, the more we want. And the more we want (and get it after that), we want more. We stop at nothing (technically speaking. pun intended) to get MORE. However, does more actually benefit us? Does material and superficial goods actually brings joy to our life?

I was always in awe at those who are intelligent, rich (monetarily) and beautiful. With good PR, generosity, compassion, understanding and ever-so-helpfulness thrown in, who can resist?

Looking at those people makes me feel ill. Most of them have never 'tasted' poverty or washed the dishes or done any simple chore for that matter.

However, at the end of the day, we should just be thankful for whatever we have.

I am tired. I just want to enjoy and be happy. Is that too much to ask for? I guess it is.

Food Service Management

This week was BUSY! From Monday to Friday i.e. rushing to and fro AH and School. Making trips to supermarkets and staying up late, trying to get work done. Finally, this week has ended. However, the nightmare is just beginning.

Anyway, my management team (you know who you =D) and I made it through 21st Jan (Wednesday). Below are my items. The theme was supposedly "Italian-English" but it is looks more Italian. Actually, they are fusions. Ask me and I will tell you.

Classic Bruschetta (Tomato & Fungi)

Penne di Pesto with lightly sauteed fish fillet accompanied with orange sauce

Presto Salad (but I don't really enjoy this)

The whole set meal (minus out the fabulous chocolate pound cake with gelato)

Oh well, at least I manage to survive this ordeal. Now, it is just the written work. Enjoy you CNY people =)))

My new resolution: COOK/BAKE more!!!

I guess once my exams are finally over, I will definitely fill this blog with more tantalizing, mouth-watering yet oh-so-easy-to-do recipes.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

A brand new year, a brand new start. Or so it was supposed to be. Plagued by all things negative, being in the negative mood was obviously unavoidable.

Last year (2008), there were few ups; mostly downs. Deep down inside, I'm actually thankful for those that made my life miserable. With those experiences, I grew fighting for acknowledgment and acceptance. Isn't it true that we learn faster when hit with misfortune?

The year passed so fast. One thing let onto another. It got me questioning: Did I change a lot, or was it everyone that stayed the same?

I embrace change and will always do so. Superficially or otherwise, change is inevitable and constant which is why I should and always follow suit. Did I mention I love change?

Thus, my new year resolution should be: Keep changing =)

Faced with obstacles and other hurdles, deep down inside, I believe I will and definitely win. Perhaps with this new found confidence, I shall take on the world. Daring to dream isn't a bad thing after all. However, how do I differentiate reality from dreams?

For the guys in Singapore, it is a must to go through full-time National Service. However, before enlistment, there is a compulsory medical check-up. Here is what I think guys should do before going for the check-up:

In random order
1. Drink lots of water prior to your appointment
2. Be prepared to wait for a few hours (esp. in the afternoon)
3. If you are scared of needles, do go for blood donation prior to your appointment as it might reduce your fear.
4. Schedule your appointment so that both you and your friend can go together.
5. Do your research on how to get there. (for east siders, refer below)
6. Follow what the letter (you will receive it a few days before your appointment) states.

Name of place: CMPB (Central Manpower Base)

If you can see from the map below, the one with the blue cross marks the building. The red star at the left hand side of the map is the bus stop to alight at. A little walk up and after you cross the road, you will see the entrance. If you are taking cab, try to alight outside the restricted area(dotted in red;refer to map) as the security checks will frustrate the NS men on duty and the cabby uncle.

For east siders who have bus concession:
Take bus 14 from Bedok Interchange to opp Alexandra Hospital. The duration is approximately 1 hour and 25 minutes. Take bus 195 from that stop and alight at the 5th stop*. That stop would be the red star.
OR take bus 16 from Bedok Interchange and alight at the 4th stop* (after the bus makes a right turn). Take bus 14 from that stop to opp of Alexandra Hospital. The total duration should be 1 hour 10 minutes. Take bus 195 from that stop and alight at the 5th stop*. That stop would be the red star.
OR You can take the MRT - take the East/West line all the way to Tiong Bahru. Walk out of the MRT till you see The Pasta House. Cross the road and take 195 to CMPB

Walk to the entrance and enter. The NS man on duty would direct you to the visitors 'corner'. Proceed with protocol and continue to Pass Office. Walk straight in the pathway that is sheltered then turn to your left where you will see the big CMPB sign on a building. Continue to walk in the left direction till you reach a flight of the stairs leading to the entrance.

The other day, 7th December, I was on the bus and found out to my horror, the Standard Chartered Marathon was on. Thus the weird route taken by bus 14. It took me an hour and I was no where close to my destination; reached Lavender MRT. And below are the pictures taken due to the organizer and participants' "consideration":

After much walking, we headed to AMK hub (is that what it is called?). It was just like any other shopping centre. Didn't had the chance to visit the NTUC too. Oh well. For lunch, we settled it at Fish & Co. Annoyance was that they didn't have OYSTERS in stock! How can they not have seafood when I am there. Anyway, for starters, we had mussels in buttery garlic sauce. HIGH CHOLESTEROL but definitely YUMS!

I don't usually write this sort of stuff, but here goes:

My parents are out of town (since last week Saturday) and the first thought was "YAY! I can do anything I want and no one would stop me!"

Gradually, that feeling lost its shine hour by hour, day by day.

Last night, I didn't know what happened but my forehead was burning, throat having some form of muscle cramp, shoulders aching, head was going to split in two and my whole body felt damn warm. My body temperature reached 38.9°C (I knew I was hot =X). I was freaking out.

I woke up late for practical (Food Service Management). After a hectic 3 hours of cookery and another 1 hour of its lecture (there were breaks in between) I was feeling...weird, very weird.

I went to work thinking "Maybe it (fever) isn't as bad as I thought." Who knew, when I reached, I was trembling slightly on the inside. The headache was worst and I felt extremely warm.

Gypsy and YiLing told me to get some rest. Apparently, earlier on, one staff fainted.

It took me an hour to reach home due to the traffic jam (peak hour). When I reached home, my cheeks were blushing and my head was spining. I quickly took a hot shower, changed and cuddle in bed. It was so cold! I thought I was going to die.

Its a thursday morning and thankfully the fever has lowered. Its 38°C now. My head isn't spinning that much as compared to last night. However, this incident got me thinking...

...it got me thinking, to STOP thinking. Perhaps all this thinking is driving me crazy. *sighs* Oh well, more gloomy weather ahead I guess.

Once again, the Mobile Blood Drive is going around getting blood. My virgin blood donation was at Alexandra Hospital. I think around May this year. Anyway, it was kinda fun =). Impromptu donation. Daphne wanted to donate and made me itchy to. In the end, she had low blood pressure and was 'barred' from donating *pang seh*. My next donation, I will pose with my bag of blood. LOL.

Yes. It is true I have been busy. Busy with school, busy with part-time job, busy with everything except trying to slow down. How meaningful can life get? And yes, I haven't been updating my blog with colourful photos and beautiful aspects of my life. Why?

Firstly, its back to square one - Time. Secondly, it is kinda getting OVER-RATED. These weeks and months of constant working has got me thinking... even MORE *scarily so*. Like how we need to evolve from one level to another, one age group to another. Change is inevitable.

However, some don't. I take that back. No, they do but I don't think its a positive one. I guess, time allows the rainbow to be seen even when it hasn't rain.

When faced with something of no return, its only then when we start to regret. Is it possible to wake up now and start anew? All these thinking is getting me hungry =X

Conflict of thoughts. Too many at a time, too quickly, more than one. How and why aren't the real questions. Now and then is. To allow myself to be consumed in anger by others stupidity is a punishment uncalled for. Let's all play pretend...shall we? In this society that predispose us to ideologies and standards that even we don't follow but judge others strictly.

I have forgotten which day it was.

I was on my way to work. Music plugged in my ears. Suddenly, a weird sound was made. I turned to my left and horror was set in my eyes. Smoke fumes drifted vertically in the air. A passer-by who was driving pass stopped to their assistance. I saw a lady followed by a child being aided out of the car. No blood (I think...) but most probably shock and panic ringing in their ears.

I felt guilty. Not only did I NOT not help them (as I was running late but that is just an excuse right?!) but I was trying to see the car plate number in hopes of buying lottery. A sudden thought came to mind - "My family car is the same as that car. Did my brother used it with his gf knowing he was leaving the country for 6 weeks? Was it them?" These thoughts filled my mind. I was terrified. However, upon remembering there was a child, definitely not my family car. *phew* And as the bus drove pass, I took another picture:

As the bus drove on, I realised - Life is truely fragile. One moment I can be laughing, the next I might be in a coma. Should I opt to pull the plug if I am in that stage? Maybe......

Lesson 1:

A man is getting into the shower just as his wife is finishing up her shower, when the doorbell rings.
The wife quickly wraps herself in a towel and runs downstairs.
When she opens the door, there stands Bob, the next-door neighbour.
Before she says a word, Bob says, 'I'll give you $800 to drop that towel.'

After thinking for a moment, the woman drops her towel and stands naked in front of Bob, after a few seconds, Bob hands her $800 and leaves.
The woman wraps back up in the towel and goes back upstairs.
When she gets to the bathroom, her husband asks, 'Who was that?'
'It was Bob the next door neighbour,' she replies.
'Great,' the husband says, 'did he say anything about the $800 he owes me?'

Moral of the story:
If you share critical information pertaining to credit and risk with your shareholders in time, you may be in a position to prevent avoidable exposure.

Lesson 2:

A priest offered a Nun a lift.
She got in and crossed her legs, forcing her gown to reveal a leg. The priest nearly had an accident.
After controlling the car, he stealthily slid his hand up her leg.
The nun said, 'Father, remember Psalm 129?'
The priest removed his hand. But, changing gears, he let his hand slide up her leg again.

The priest apologized 'Sorry sister but the flesh is weak.'
Arriving at the convent, the nun sighed heavily and went on her way.

If you are not well informed in your job, you might miss a great opportunity.

Lesson 3:

A sales rep, an administration clerk, and the manager are walking to lunch when they find an antique oil lamp.

They rub it and a Genie comes out.
The Genie says, 'I'll give each of you just one wish.'
'Me first! Me first!' says the admin clerk. 'I want to be in the Bahamas, driving a speedboat, without a care in the world.'
Puff! She's gone.

'Me next! Me next!' says the sales rep. 'I want to be in Hawaii , relaxing on the beach with my personal masseuse, an endless supply of Pina Coladas and the love of my life.'

Puff! He's gone.

'OK, you're up,' the Genie says to the manager.
The manager says, 'I want those two back in the office after lunch.'

Moral of the story:
Always let your boss have the first say.

Lesson 4

An eagle was sitting on a tree resting, doing nothing.
A small rabbit saw the eagle and asked him, 'Can I also sit like you and do nothing?'
The eagle answered: 'Sure, why not.'
So, the rabbit sat on the ground below the eagle and rested. All of a sudden, a fox appeared, jumped on the rabbit and ate it.

Moral of the story:
To be sitting and doing nothing, you must be sitting very, very high up.

Lesson 5

A turkey was chatting with a bull.

'I would love to be able to get to the top of that tree' sighed the turkey, 'but I haven't got the energy.'
'Well, why don't you nibble on some of my droppings?' replied the bull. They're packed with nutrients.'

The turkey pecked at a lump of dung, and found it actually gave him enough str ength to reach the lowest branch of the tree.

The next day, after eating some more dung, he reached the second branch.

Finally after a fourth night, the turkey was proudly perched at the top of the tree.

He was promptly spotted by a farmer, who shot him out of the tree.

Moral of the story:
Bull Shit might get you to the top, but it won't keep you there..

Lesson 6

A little bird was flying south for the winter. It was so cold the bird froze and fell to the ground into a large field.
While he was lying there, a cow came by and dropped some dung on him.
As the frozen bird lay there in the pile of cow dung, he began to realize how warm he was.
The dung was actually thawing him out!
He lay there all warm and happy, and soon began to sing for joy.
A passing cat heard the bird singing and came to investigate.

Following the sound, the cat discovered the bird under the pile of cow dung, and promptly dug him out and ate him.

Morals of the story:
(1) Not everyone who shits on you is your enemy.

(2) Not everyone who gets you out of shit is your
friend.

(3) And when you're in deep shit, it's best to keep
your mouth shut!

As promised, this post is about my 19th birthday. This year's birthday felt really different. I just can't tell. Anyway, wanna thank the gorgeous assistant manager of JP, Gypsy. And the always-looking-young Yi Ling. I tell you, she has two children but she and her hubby look like they just started dating =X.

Both of them are so nice. On the 6th Oct, I was working. They brought me to HK cafe (Hiun-ng Kong Cha Chan Teng) and bought the Mango Mousse cake from JP. At first I was still wondering why she took a cake home. But half way walking there, I realised they were planning to celebrate my birthday. THANKS =)))

It was about 12 going to 1 in the morning and out of no where, two person's jumped out literally holding a birthday cake. I was really surprised. Thanks so much =))). Why do people who choose the Polytechnic route pay MORE $$$ (for transportation) as compared to their peers who enter the JCs and ITE?

Personally, I have always resented the fact that we (as Poly students) have to pay more. Especially more so when BS* reasons like 'able to find job' and 'Tertiary student' come out from peoples' mouth. Aren't JCs students considered Tertiary students? Do we get a higher pay as compared with our JC counterparts (who have been to the U)?

This is not a personal attack at my peers who chose the JC or ITE path. There is NOTHING personal. It is a matter of 'why do we have to pay nearly DOUBLE of the usual student fares'?
